Partners In Education: Better Schools. Better Teachers. Better Haiti.

The ANA Project

Project Outline

A New Arrival (ANA) is a combo orphanage and primary school. Currently, the ANA orphanage houses four orphans. Everything these children need is provided for them: Food, water, shelter, healthcare, education, sanitation, clothing and play, all in a suitable and positive family-like environment.

ANA is also a primary school offering two classes, 1st and 2nd grade. As the children grow up, the teachers move with them to teach at each grade level. The school has enrolled 44 students (including the 4 orphans). Each student receives 1 lunchtime meal from Kozefó.

But like many orphanages and schools in Haiti, ANA is under supported. We had to fight to find food for the school as government-feeding programs have been shutting down due to lack of funding. The orphanage staff and teachers are underpaid and often paid late because funds are not received from the government. The school lacks extra-curricular activities, the teachers are under trained, and the national education program is old and irrelevant to modern standards. The ANA orphanage is capable of supporting 40 orphans, yet only houses 4 due to lack of funds. The director and administrative staff have worked as volunteers for two years.

Project Goal

Our goal is to work side by side with ANA staff to make ANA an orphanage and school that exceeds the national standards of Haiti and thus making it a model for the country.

Project Objectives

Kozefó will accomplish it’s goal by following these objectives:

1)    Generating resources through sponsorships, donations, partnerships and grant proposals.

2)    Utilizing resources to improve pay to the staff, take on more orphans, enrich the learning environment and establish an endowment for ANA.

3)    Analyze national standards of education so as to conceive, design and implement a more relevant and stimulating educational program.

4)    Conducting ongoing management mentoring for ANA administration.

5)    Conceive, design and implement professional development training for the teachers.

6)    Conceive, design and implement after-school enrichment programs.

ANA Language Institute

As part of objective one, Kozefó has been working with staff at ANA to develop a Language Institute.  The ANA Language Institute currently hosts three classes in our two classrooms. English is the only language being taught, but plans are in the works to open a Spanish class on the weekends.

Not only does ANA benefit from the profits of the institute, but community members who master a second language have better job opportunities with NGO’s or international businesses.
